Climate-responsive occupational health and safety for workers with albinism in Africa

04-08-2026 3:00 pm
Free

Presented by Dr Laetitia Fourie and Dr Cecile de Villiers, Academic, University of Free State.

Our presentation will highlight the climate-related health vulnerabilities of workers with albinism in South Africa, Zimbabwe and Tanzania. All three countries face similar occupational health risks due to climate change, which is a critical threat to workers with albinism.

Through a mapping of international labour standards, relevant regional human rights frameworks and domestic occupational health and safety (OHS) legislation, we identify and consolidate the OHS protections available to workers with albinism and offer interpretative pathways to leverage existing OHS provisions to better protect their health. Throughout the presentation we will also provide practical examples to assist employers and employees to make OHS more accessible.
